The latest version of the Dynamic Imaging service now includes support for the Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) format, an ISO standard for managing metadata in digital assets. Customers can add XMP metadata to an asset before it is imported into the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system and then query that metadata when the asset is published.

One of the most common uses for XMP metadata is to store rights management information, which might include copyright information, the date on which the license to use an image expires, or where the image can be used, for example. The information in the metadata can be queried and used to apply business rules, to prevent an image being displayed that the user no longer has the rights to, for example. The XMP specification includes predefined schemas covering properties for documents and images, the most common of which is Dublin Core specification. You can also define custom schemas to include properties not covered by the predefined XMP schemas.

Extracting the XMP Metadata

To return the XMP metadata for an asset, just add ".xmp" to the end of the asset's URL and the Dynamic Imaging service will retrieve the asset's metadata.

In the example below, XMP metadata, including some rights information has been added to an image that has then been uploaded to DAM. To extract the XMP data from the asset use the following:

This will return the metadata as shown below. In this case the image is subject to rights restrictions.

Extracting XMP data from an asset can take a lot of processing time, since the data is requested from the Dynamic Imaging service, and then parsed and made available to the requestor serialised in XML format. The XMP can also include binary data, potentially making the payload very large. As such we recommend using this service as part of a back end server or ecommerce process, rather than accessing XMP metadata dynamically from within a web page.

Using the service

The XMP metadata extraction service is initially switched off for all customers. To activate the service and to discuss your own usage requirements, please contact your Customer Success Manager.
